What to expect
Two Ways to Fish Hokkaido
We offer two types of guided fishing from Otaru: ocean harbor fishing along the coast, and private fly fishing on Hokkaido's rivers. Both are fully guided, all gear provided, no experience required.
What You'll Catch
July and August are prime season on Hokkaido's coast. Depending on conditions, expect:
- Chika (pond smelt) — reliable sabiki target, schools near the surface
- Aji (horse mackerel) — fast bites, great for beginners
- Saba (mackerel) — runs strong mid-summer
- Mebaru & Soi (rockfish) — bottom and hole fishing along rocky structure
- Karei (flatfish) — bottom fishing in calmer bays
- Ika (squid) — peak season July through August
Two Techniques
We fish with sabiki rigs for schooling species near the surface, and switch to bottom or hole fishing for rockfish and flatfish along harbour walls. Your guide reads the conditions and picks the right approach for the day.
Keep or Release
Any fish you catch is yours to take home. Prefer to release? That's equally welcome — we handle fish carefully and practice responsible fishing either way.
Harbor Locations
Yoichi Port (余市港) — ~25 min west of Otaru. Our top pick for variety and facilities. Widest range of species, parking and toilets on site.
Shioya Fishing Harbor (塩谷漁港) — ~10–15 min west. Tetrapod structures, low fishing pressure. Daytime sessions only.
Oshoro Port (忍路漁港) — ~15–20 min west. Sheltered bay, very quiet. Walk-in only — no vehicles inside the port.
